Travel back in 79 a.d. when the ancient roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum got covered by the fury of Mt. Vesuvius!
Pompeii was a commercial city that traded vases, oil, wine and more products from the Campania Region thanks to its port during the Roman Empire. Walk through the neighborhoods that got covered by mud, ash and other volcanic debris during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, visit the houses, commercial activities, theaters, baths, the gym, and admire the genius of its engineering. Well preserved are the objects found during the past excavations and dramatic, but impressive, are the casts found bringing to life the terrifying moment with their expressions.
Even better preserved is Herculaneum with its decorations and floors in terracotta. The city named after the Greek myth Hercules was also hit by the ash, heat and pyroclastic flow that killed its inhabitants. Herculaneum used to house richer people than Pompeii and it was used as a stop for travelers to recover from their journey.
Experts found the skeletons of over 300 people that tried to save themselves when they were escaping for their lives. It could be a little challenging for those who are not used to hiking, but the view highly repays your efforts. Climb up the most famous sleepy volcano in Europe and take some breathtaking shots from the top overlooking the entire Gulf of Naples with Sorrento, Capri and Naples city!
